90+ Groups Launch Campaign Against California Oil

Last week, over 90 activist organizations signed and circulated a letter condemning Kern County’s decision to streamline its oil and gas drilling permit process through a zoning ordinance update. These groups have pledged to launch an aggressive campaign, including grassroots mobilization, direct lobbying of local and state lawmakers, and coordinated media efforts aimed at shutting down in-state oil production.

While their intent is clear, ending domestic energy development in California, CIPA remains fully committed to pushing back against it. Our staff and leadership are actively reminding lawmakers, regulators, and the public that:

  • California pays the highest gas prices in the nation

  • The state now imports more oil from the Amazon Rainforest than it produces at home

  • Domestic production is safer, more regulated, and supports thousands of high-paying jobs

  • Energy independence is not just an economic issue; it’s a public health and national security priority

Over the next 60–90 days, we anticipate a sustained surge of opposition activities, including media campaigns aimed at weakening Kern County’s authority and prompting state officials to change course. CIPA will not back down. We are organizing a coordinated response that involves legislative outreach, earned media, rapid-response messaging, and direct engagement with key stakeholders across the state.

But our position is clear: California cannot afford to outsource its energy needs while sacrificing jobs, tax revenue, and economic security.
